Getting here

We are situated close to the M53, and you can also reach us by taking the train to Birkenhead Hamilton Square station, which is a 15 minute taxi ride away.

Your consultations

All your consultations will take place in one of our 13 accessible private rooms, so don’t worry if you have pain when walking. During your consultations, we'll:

  • Ask about your medical history
  • Say whether you need blood tests, an X-ray, and/or an MRI or CT scan so they can examine your hip in more detail
  • Tell you about the different types of artificial hip joints – also called a prosthesis – as well as the surgical methods
  • Explain about the different anaesthetic options
  • Discuss the potential risks and complications and how they may affect you
  • Give you a chance to ask any questions you have about your surgery

Once you’ve decided to go ahead with hip surgery, your consultant and your physiotherapist will explain your recovery plan. Both your initial consultation and tests at this stage are charged separately to the cost of any treatment needed.

Hip replacement: your procedure

On the day of your operation, our ward staff will show you to your own private room. We have 27 private rooms at Spire Murrayfield Wirral, all of which contain:

  • TV
  • En-suite
  • Window
  • Armchair

If you’ve come with a friend or family member, they’re welcome to wait in our lounge or restaurant while you have your operation.

Once you’re ready, you’ll prepare for your operation and be given your anaesthetic. You’ll have either:

  • General anaesthetic where you’re unconscious
  • An epidural or spinal anaesthetic where you're numb from the waist down – your anaesthetist may give you a sedative to help you relax

During the operation, your surgeon will make one or more incisions and remove damaged or worn parts of your hip joint. They’ll then insert your new, prosthetic joint. The operation should take around an hour and a half. You’ll probably stay with us for two to three days after your operation, until we feel you’re ready to go home and continue your recovery there.

Hip replacement surgery: your recovery

Once your operation is finished, you’ll be taken back to your private room to start your recovery. You may feel some discomfort and swelling at first, which is completely normal. We’ll give you pain relief to help you and make sure you’re comfortable.

One of our physiotherapists will get you walking again and give you some exercises you should do throughout your recovery to help you get the most from your operation.
