Spire Murrayfield Hospital reaches milestones in advanced knee replacement surgery

11 November 2025

A huge congratulations to Mr Alan Highcock and the incredible Theatre Team at Spire Murrayfield Hospital, Wirral, on reaching two remarkable milestones:

100th Evolution Knee Alignment procedure and 50th Augmented Reality Total Knee Replacement (TKR)

These achievements were celebrated with balloons and cake, with Mr Highcock and his team.

Mr Highcock shared:
“I’m honoured to reach these milestones in Augmented Reality Knee Replacement and Medial Pivot knee arthroplasty, and deeply grateful for the ongoing support from Spire Murrayfield Hospital’s management and staff.”

What is the Evolution® Knee Replacement?
The Evolution® Medial-Pivot Knee System, is a cutting edge total knee replacement. Unlike other knee replacements it restores the normal biomechanics of the knee, mimicking the natural motion and stability. Therefore, patient experiences a more 'natural' feeling knee. This technique has shown higher patient satisfaction compared to traditional knee replacement.

What is Augmented Reality TKR?
Augmented Reality (AR) in knee surgery allows surgeons to visualize 3D models of the patient’s anatomy in real time using smart glasses or headsets. This enhances precision, improves implant positioning, and supports better outcomes. AR-assisted TKR is transforming orthopaedic surgery by making procedures more personalised and efficient.

Mr Highcock is one of the leading orthopaedic surgeons in AR technology in the UK, and the only one in the region offering Medial-Pivot AR-assisted knee replacements. His dedication to innovation and patient care continues to set new standards in joint surgery.
