Spire Leicester Hospital Awarded for Supporting Autistic Patients

18 May 2026

Spire Leicester Hospital has been awarded an internationally recognised quality standard in recognition of its commitment to understanding autism and creating a supportive environment to autistic children and adults.

The hospital has achieved the National Autistic Society’s Autism Inclusion Award, which celebrates organisations that go above and beyond to improve accessibility and understanding for autistic individuals.

For many autistic people, visiting a hospital can feel overwhelming. Recognising this, Spire Leicester Hospital has taken meaningful steps to make its environment calmer, more accessible, and more responsive to individual needs.

From the moment patients arrive, thoughtful adjustments are in place to support a more comfortable experience. The hospital is part of the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Scheme, helping staff to discreetly recognise and support those who may need additional understanding or assistance.

Patients and visitors also benefit from a range of carefully considered facilities, including quiet spaces for reflection, sensory-aware environments, hearing loop systems, and step-free access throughout the hospital. These changes are designed not only to reduce anxiety but to help patients feel more in control of their care.

The hospital’s teams have also embedded a culture of compassion and awareness, ensuring staff are equipped to provide personalised, respectful care to every individual who walks through the doors.
