Understanding Anxiety, Neurodiversity and Emotionally Based School Avoidance

The session will explore:

• Recognising emotionally based school avoidance early – including anxiety, physical/somatic symptoms, sleep disturbance, masking, perfectionism and less obvious presentations that may initially appear behavioural or oppositional.
  
  • Understanding what sits beneath school refusal – considering the interaction between anxiety, neurodevelopmental vulnerabilities such as ASD/ADHD, trauma, peer and school difficulties, family stress and the young person’s developmental and relational context.
  
  • What GPs can do in practice – useful questions to ask, assessing emotional wellbeing and risk, supporting parents, working constructively with schools, avoiding responses that may inadvertently escalate distress, and recognising when specialist assessment or referral is indicated.
