Breast enlargement: Anna's story

Anna Shotton, 34, from Meanwood, Leeds, had breast augmentation surgery at Spire Leeds Hospital under the care of consultant plastic surgeon Ms Catherine Hernon.

Anna, who works for a financial services company in Leeds, is one of a growing number of women choosing to have breast augmentation after having a child. Anna always felt her body shape was out of proportion.

“I’m big-boned and had large hips and small breasts,” she said. “I had always wanted to have breast implants to balance my shape. Then after childbirth my breasts were much smaller. I thought about it for a very long time and finally decided it was the right time to have it done.”

Originally from Moscow, Anna originally came to the UK in 2005 to study Social Science at Leeds University. She got married and had her son James six years ago, and later divorced. Anna chose to have breast augmentation surgery at Spire Leeds Hospital following a friend’s recommendation and subsequent research.

“There are many clinics around offering this type of surgery, however, this was the first surgery I had undergone in my life and I wanted to make sure I had the procedure done at a reputable hospital with full facilities, good doctors and proper aftercare,” she said.

Anna underwent surgery in November 2012 under the care of consultant plastic surgeon, Catherine Hernon at Spire Leeds Hospital. The implants increased her cup size from B to DD. “The surgeon talked me through the options and explained everything clearly. She helped me to choose the size and type of implants,” said Anna.

Catherine Hernon said. “I use the latest generation of textured shell, cohesive gel silicone implants from reputable implant manufacturers, which can be round or anatomical (tear drop shaped). The implants have different base dimensions to correlate with the size of the patient’s chest and also come in different heights or projections. The type of implant chosen depends on the size and shape of the patient’s breasts and is discussed as part of the consultation.”

“To help my patients make the right choices, I also use a sizing kit which consists of a vest which can be filled with different sizes of test implants. This gives patients an idea of what a particular sized implant would look like on them,” she added.

After the 1½ hour procedure Anna stayed in hospital overnight and went home the next day. “All went well, I felt fine and was back at work after 10 days.”

Anna added, “I am very happy with the results. I feel so much more confident in myself. I would definitely recommend it to others who are thinking about having the procedure. Just be sure to do your research and choose an accredited surgeon and the right hospital.”
