CQC upgrades Spire Leeds Hospital to ‘Good’

01 June 2020

Spire Leeds Hospital has been upgraded to a ‘Good’ rating, following an inspection by the Care Quality Commission (CQC).

Inspectors carried out a comprehensive examination into services offered at the Roundhay facility, earlier in the year, including an unannounced inspection in March. They concluded that the facility should be upgraded to a ‘Good’ rating, having been classified as ‘Requires Improvement’ at the time of the last inspection in 2018.

This means that 90% of all Spire Healthcare hospitals and clinics are now rated ‘Good’ or ‘Outstanding,’ or the national equivalent in Scotland and Wales.

The regulatory body examined whether services were safe, effective, caring, responsive to people's needs, and well-led. The hospital received ‘Good’ ratings across the board.

The CQC praised the hard work put in by staff to ensure that patients had a good experience while receiving care and treatment. Inspectors noted that staff recognised and responded to patients’ individual needs all the way through from admission to discharge.

The CQC praised the way the hospital sought to ensure that care was joined-up, with patient appointments arranged over one day to prevent the need for patients to pay multiple visits. The way the hospital plans services tailored to the needs of the local community was also commended.

Inspectors also praised the new leadership team at the hospital for prioritising actions to drive improvements. The way the hospital engages positively with equality groups was also noted.

Spire Leeds Hospital has two wards with 56 beds in total, an extended recovery unit with eight beds and a dedicated children’s ward with eight beds. It also has an oncology unit and an outpatients department. Hospital facilities at Spire Leeds Hospital include seven operating theatres, X-ray, outpatient and diagnostic facilities. The hospital provides surgery, medical care, and diagnostic imaging to people in Leeds, Harrogate, Ilkley and other parts of West and North Yorkshire.

Helen Atkinson, Hospital Director at Spire Leeds Hospital, said: “I am delighted that everything we have done to turn around Spire Leeds in the 18 months since the last inspection, has been recognised with today’s ‘Good’ rating from the CQC. It’s a tribute to the hard work and commitment of all our colleagues to providing the highest quality care to our patients. We’re now striving to get an ‘Outstanding’ rating, when we’re next inspected.”
