Mrs Carla Barker
"The wonderful staff at Spire Leeds allow patients and visitors to feel welcome and cared for from the first moment. For me, it's imperative that in hospital patients and their families feel cared for, welcome and safe."
Yoga has many physical and mental health benefits such as improved muscular strength, balance, flexibility, improved body awareness, breathing pattern and sleep. Research supports the use of yoga to help decrease stress and anxiety and to help with lower back pain. As a physiotherapist and yoga teacher, I am committed to helping people move in ways that are mindful and safe, in an environment that is supportive. My aim is to make Yoga accessible to all people, no matter how they are feeling physically or mentally. I draw upon my knowledge of anatomy to ensure safety whilst offering different options or modifications to make poses more accessible and achievable.
I have worked at Spire Leeds Hospital since 2007. Over the years I have worked across both in-patients and outpatients, from pre-assessment clinics and treating patients on the ward to leading post-operative hip and knee classes. More recently I have been working to promote health and activity within the hospital. I have a passion for helping people improve their health through activity. I also devised a ‘Fit for 5km’ programme to help those who lack confidence with exercise build up slowly towards running a 5km run.
As well as my BSc in physiotherapy I have a Level 3 Fitness Instructing and Personal Training Diploma and Levels 1 and 2 APPI Pilates. I am also a 200hr registered Vinyasa Flow yoga teacher and 50hr Yin yoga teacher with the Yoga Alliance.
Spire Leeds Hospital is only able to provide Covid-19 tests to patients undergoing surgery at our hospital. Covid-19 testing or antibody tests are not available as a standalone service.
I have a regular yoga practice, the type of yoga that I choose to practice will depend on how I feel and what I feel my body needs that day. You can find me in anything from a Vinyasa Flow or Ashtanga class to resting in a Yin or Yoga Nidra (sleepy yoga!) class.
I also enjoy running (with my dog), and completed the Extreme North Quadrathlon in 2016.
