MD FRCS(Eng) FRCS(SN) Dip Clin ED
I am a Consultant Neurosurgeon specialising in spinal surgery and have dedicated my career to the management of a wide range of spinal conditions. I completed my neurosurgical training at Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust between 1996 and 2001, followed by a National Spinal Fellowship in Leeds from 2002 to 2003. I served as a substantive Consultant Neurosurgeon specialising in spinal surgery from 2003 to 2016 and continue to work as an Honorary Consultant Neurosurgeon at Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust.
Over the course of my career, I have introduced and developed a number of advanced spinal procedures across both NHS and private practice in Yorkshire and the North of England. I was the first surgeon in the region to introduce XLIF, ALIF and minimally invasive TLIF procedures. I also developed an award-winning vertebroplasty service, pioneered computer-navigated spinal fusion surgery in the North of England, and helped establish artificial disc replacement surgery and minimally invasive anterior thoracic spinal procedures.
I treat the full spectrum of spinal conditions, with the exception of paediatric and idiopathic scoliosis. My particular areas of interest include cervical spine surgery and minimally invasive lumbar surgery. Throughout my career, I have performed thousands of spinal procedures and contribute my outcomes data to the British Spine Registry as part of my commitment to clinical quality and continuous improvement.
Alongside my clinical practice, I have held a number of leadership and professional roles. I am currently a Council Member of the British Society of Neurological Surgeons and have previously served as a Trustee of the Thackray Medical Museum, a Training Representative for the European Association of Neurosurgical Societies (EANS) Training Programme and a Council Member of the World Federation of Neurosurgical Societies.
I have a longstanding commitment to education, research and innovation in spinal surgery. With nearly 25 years of experience as a Consultant, I have authored more than 80 peer-reviewed publications, contributed several book chapters and served as an editor for scientific journals. I have organised national and international conferences, including meetings for the European Association of Neurosurgical Societies and National Neurotrauma Study Days. I also regularly teach surgeons from around the world in minimally invasive spinal techniques.
Outside of work, I enjoy travelling and combining my interests in surgery and music by playing guitar with a spinal surgery band at national and international conferences. I have also written a novel and hope to continue writing in the future.
