I have been a diabetes specialist since 1979, with an interest in diabetes diagnosis, diabetes that is difficult to control, diabetic complications, including male sexual dysfunction and ethnic variants of diabetes.

I was previously the medical director for diabetes and endocrinology at Leeds Teaching Hospitals.

I am the principal investigator in various research studies on diabetes and member of the steering group of the ASCEND study, Oxford University.

I was previously committee chairperson, EFSD, European foundation for the study of diabetes.
