Dr Mathias Toth

Consultant Physician

State Exam, MD, FRCP (UK)

I am a consultant physician in general internal medicine and geriatric medicine at Spire Hartswood Hospital in Brentwood, Essex.

My research interests include fracture prevention, osteoporotic back pain, male osteoporosis and falls risks including sarcopenia, the reduction of muscle strength due to muscle wasting. I offer comprehensive medical reviews and have a special interest in dizziness, syncope and falls. As part of the assessment I offers tilt table testing for faints, syncopal attacks, POTS and other neuro-cardiogenic syndromes. I am passionate about the prevention of vascular ageing, and offer assessment of patients with refractory hypertension, one of the biggest risk factors for accelerated ageing and strokes. As part of this, I participate in TIA and stroke prevention clinics. Last but not least, I run a Parkinson's clinic in close liaison with my colleagues in neurology.

I chaired the drugs & therapeutics committee at my NHS hospital for several years and as part of this have developed an interest in 'iatrogenic disease' - clinical problems arising from the undesired effects and side effects of medication. I am the foundation program director for newly qualified doctors at Darent Valley Hospital, under the auspices of the South Thames Foundation School. I am assistant clinical director of medicine and clinical lead for geriatric medicine in his NHS practice. I have received several merit awards and a number of 'every thank you counts awards' in my NHS practice. This year I have been awarded the 'most supportive consultant of the year for training and education' award by the junior doctors.

I was appointed consultant physician at Darent Valley Hospital in 2002. I have set up an integrated osteoporosis and bone health clinic at Darent Valley Hospital, which includes DXA scanning and clinical assessment of fracture risks. There are currently several hundred patients attending my clinic for parenteral osteoporosis therapy. This is important for all the patients unable to take oral medication for osteoporosis, which is notoriously poorly tolerated.

I qualified in 1987, obtaining an MD in 1991 for my work on excitation contraction coupling in the heart. I completed my clinical training in general internal and geriatric medicine, having completed a registrar rotation in south London in 2002. I regularly lecture locally and regionally on various pharmaceutical topics, have presented at the Stanmore fragility fracture course and was invited to speak on the topic of 'fracture prevention in Parkinson's Disease' at Queens Hospital in Romford. I had the honour of participating in medical services at the Queens garden party at Buckingham Palace.
