Hip replacement – a different approach

06 April 2016

A different approach to hip replacement, only recently introduced to the UK, is now available to patients at Dunedin Hospital in Reading.

In this video interview, Mr Ali Ghoz FRCS, Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon talks about hip replacement by the 'anterior approach method', which can result in shorter recovery times, less pain for the patient and fewer post-operative restrictions. He covers inclusion and exclusion criteria, since this procedure is not for everyone, and explains that the procedure is only just beginning to be used in the UK, although it is already widely employed in countries such as Switzerland, Germany, France, USA and Australia. Mr Ghoz describes the special table and other equipment necessary in carrying out the procedure and concludes by listing the benefits it offers to individuals, their employers and to hospitals.
