Professional profile

I trained in Birmingham, UK from 1985 to 1990 and subsequently worked in the West Midlands and Oxford hospitals before embarking on a career in respiratory medicine. I completed my specialist training in 1999 after working at High Wycombe, Banbury, and the Churchill and John Radcliffe Hospitals, Oxford. During this time I completed a doctorate based on work around pneumonia and pleural disease and produced several studies about obstructive sleep apnoea and cardiovascular risks.

My main interests other than general respiratory medicine are pleural disease, pulmonary emboli and sleep related breathing disorders including sleep apnoea. I am actively involved with all other aspects of respiratory medicine, especially airway disease and suspected lung cancer. I have written over 500 medicolegal reports predominantly in the field of asbestos related lung diseases, but also covering many other aspects of thoracic medicine and some negligence cases.

I commenced as Consultant Physician to the Royal Berkshire & Battle NHS Foundation Trust in January 2000. I have been a member of the British Thoracic Society (BTS) since 1994 and was a co-author of the BTS Pleural Guidelines published in 2004 and 2010, including the lead author for the publications on management of pleural infection.

I specialise in: (1) Out-patient consultations for patients with respiratory and breathing disorders; (2) Diagnostic sleep study facilities including assessment in your own home for the evaluation of the conditions of sleep disordered breathing including snoring and sleep apnoea; (3) Treatment of sleep apnoea with CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) using the latest modern equipment from ResMed®; (4) Lung function testing including spirometry, lung volumes and gas transfer; (5) Medico-legal reports for patients with thoracic disorders including those with asbestos related claims; (6) Bronchoscopy – fibre optic examination of the airways; (7) In-patient care for patients needing hospitalisation for management of their illness if necessary; (8) Access to specialist respiratory physiotherapy for patients with respiratory disorders.

I am a member of the British Thoracic Society Guideline Group on the Management of Pulmonary Embolism. I have also been on the BTS Guideline Group for Pleural Diseases and was a co-author of the BTS Pleural Guidelines published in 2004 and 2010, including the lead author for the publications on management of pleural infection.
