Bariatric Surgeon, Mr Shashi Irukulla broke new ground at Spire Clare Park Hospital recently. He performed a new non-surgical weight loss alternative to the more traditional sleeve, balloon or band - the endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty (ESG). This offers similar weight loss benefits but without the surgery or scars. It is also a safer, lower risk procedure performed as a day case in around two hours under general anaesthetic. It also has less recovery time; patients typically return to their normal lifestyles within one to three days.
Mr Irukulla explained the procedure he performed in the new dedicated endoscopy suite at Spire Clare Park Hospital that opened in March this year, “Endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty falls under the umbrella of endoscopy – the non-surgical procedure that gastroenterologists use to examine a person’s digestive tract. An endoscopy is when a flexible tube with lights and a camera is placed in the body through the mouth to examine the stomach and gut.
"It is similar to a gastric sleeve operation, but no incisions are made because the procedure is done through the tube orally. The tube is snaked down into the patient's stomach, going through the mouth and throat. From there an endoscopic suturing device reduces the size of the stomach by creating a 'sleeve' with sutures. This makes the stomach into a smaller pouch so a person will feel fuller faster.”
Mr Irukulla continued, “As a new procedure, there is little data available on medium and long term outcomes. However the evidence we have from recently conducted studies suggests that people can expect to lose about half of their excess weight over a 12-18 month period. Also, people have seen an improvement in their conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes, and other diseases associated with obesity.”
"In conclusion the ESG is a very good option if you don’t want the maintenance commitment of a gastric band (e.g. band fills); you don’t want the risks and recovery time associated with a surgical procedure; you don’t want a procedure that leaves visible scarring and you want a non-surgical procedure that gives better long term results than a gastric balloon."
Mr Irukulla ended, “Endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty is particularly ideal for people who may not be suitable for other non-surgical weight-loss surgeries. To those who have been left with disappointment, there’s finally some hope.
For people that have tried other ways to lose weight, but have not been successful, a weight loss procedure may be the solution. Mr Irukulla offers a range of weight loss surgeries in addition to ESG such as gastric balloon, gastric band, gastric bypass and gastric sleeve.
