Mr David Baldwin
Consultant ENT Surgeon

Specialises in
I am a Consultant ENT Surgeon and run my private ENT clinic here at Spire Bristol Hospital. I see a variety of private patients who require diagnosis and treatment of an array of conditions relating to the ear, nose and throat.
I am locally schooled and a product of Thornbury Grammar. I completed undergraduate training at Southampton Medical School before undertaking my ENT surgical rotations through Great Ormond Street, The Royal National Throat Nose and Ear, St Bartholomews and The London Hospitals.
I undertook a Skull Base Fellowship at University of Michigan, USA, researching aspects of cochlea microcirculation and its regulation. I then completed my head and neck surgical and reconstructive training with a further year at the Royal Marsden and St Mary's Hospital in London. I have published on various aspects of pharyngeal pouch surgery, acoustic neuroma and cochlea microcirculation as well as outcomes following head and neck cancer treatments.
In 1990 I was appointed Consultant Surgeon and Senior Lecturer to North Bristol Hospitals. I have been engaged in the treatment of both adults and children with general ENT problems but in particular head and neck pathologies. This has fascinated me as each individual has presented unique surgical challenges often in tandem with psychological and emotional problems. I have developed within Bristol a strong network of fellow professionals across all specialities to ensure that you as the patient gain from a truly multi disciplinary team. I have specialised in minimally invasive head and neck surgery, in particular I devised the technique of endoscopic pharyngeal pouch surgery, which is now the standard treatment for this condition.
I have progressively embraced new technologies over the years and have extensive experience with trans oral Laser surgery (TOLS) for both benign and malignant disorders of the larynx, pharynx and oral cavity. I am currently engaged in the evaluation of robotic surgical devices in oral and throat disorders.
For the past 20 years I have provided, within an MDT framework, advice and surgical leadership in the treatment of complex cranial tumours, from benign neuroma of the inner ear and skull base to malignant disorders of the facial skeleton, nose and sinuses. I regularly work within a team of neuro and plastic surgeons to provide bespoke surgical solutions for patients throughout the South West of England and South Wales.
I enjoy the challenge of surgery almost as much as talking about it and remain passionate about delivering high quality surgical outcomes. In addition to operating I have found time to represent myself as Director of Surgery at North Bristol NHS Trust, Chair the Medical Advisory Committee of the Glen Hospital, act as Chairman of the South West Regional Training Committee and South West Head and Neck Expert Tumour Panel, as well as Regional Representative of the Royal College of Surgeons.
