Spire Washington Hospital's oncology service is led by a dedicated and highly experienced team of consultant clinical oncologists who give advice and manage many different types of cancers. They are all experts in the management of the side effects of chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Should you wish to visit our unit prior to treatment commencing, we are more than happy to meet you and discuss any queries you may have.

Patient experience

At Spire Washington Hospital we aim to make your stay as comfortable as possible. Our oncology suite is equipped with a flat screen television where you can watch DVDs while having your treatment or listen to music. There is also opportunities to meet fellow patients to discuss and allieviate concerns.


Pathology

We are able to offer a pathology service to our patients and results are available to clinicians promptly.


Tests and scans

We are committed to providing each patient with the most appropriate treatment as quickly as possible. Fast diagnosis is crucial for the successful treatment of cancer. Our radiographers and consultant radiologists carry out and interpret examinations at the hospital.

Spire Washington Hospital offers MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) and CT (computerised tomography) scanning, Ultrasound, X-ray and Mammograms six days a week at convenient appointment times.


Pharmacy

Our dedicated team of pharmacists enable our service to run safely and efficiently. Our pharmacists can offer help and advice on your treatment and medications supplied.


Scalp cooling

Spire Washington Hospital offers scalp cooling using "Paxman coolers" - scalp cooling can prevent or limit the side effects of alopecia (hair loss) experienced when using certain chemotherapy drugs. Our team will be happy to discuss this in more detail if required.


Nipple tattooing

After breast and nipple reconstruction we are able to offer nipple tattooing as a final cosmetic touch to give a colour to the nipple and surrounding area creating an areola to match the opposite breast. The procedure is carried out in one of our clinic rooms by our specialist breast care nurse, Amanda Pinkerton.

The oncology service at Spire Washington Hospital is open to all, not just those with private medical insurance. If you are not insured, please contact our customer service advisors on 0191 418 8687 who will be happy to advise you of the cost for your treatment.


Pink Ribbon Programme

We are now able to offer post-op breast cancer patients the Pink Ribbon Program which aims to improve the physical and emotional well-being of women who have had breast cancer through physical exercise. Recent studies indicate a link between moderate physical exercise and improved quality of life for breast cancer survivors. The Pink Ribbon Pilates Program is suitable whether your surgery was recent or several years ago and is suitable for all fitness levels.
