I qualified as a doctor from the University of Madras, India in 1989 and followed it by higher specialist training in the UK. I have been working as a Consultant in Pain Management & Anaesthetics at Sunderland Royal Hospital from 2005, with the majority of my time spent in managing chronic pain.

I use a balanced approach for chronic pain management with the help of medications and injection procedures where necessary. I acknowledge the multidisciplinary role in restoring physical functioning and work hand in hand with physiotherapists and psychologists.

I have acquired my own practical skills through experience and participating in several international courses to learn from experts in the field. I have a subspecialty interest in neuropathic pain and understand the challenges it poses for effective management. I took a gap year during my training to research into receptor pharmacology at Sunderland University that helps me understand the basic science behind many chronic pain conditions.

The procedures that I specialise in for pain management include cervical and lumbar facet joint injections, radiofrequency denervation of these facet joints, nerve root blocks or transforminal epidural injections, caudal epidural, stellate ganglion blocks, trigger point injections and injections into various joints such as costochondral, sacroiliac, shoulders, knees and ankles.

I attempt to have a clear understanding with the patients that in most cases, the injection interventions will only provide a temporary respite but the break in the pain cycle is an opportunity for them to develop their coping strategies, embrace lifestyle changes and work towards a physical recovery.
