Dr Stuart Russell

I am an experienced Consultant Cardiologist and lead the secondary care Heart Failure Service in East Cheshire. I care for patients with a wide range of heart conditions and have a specialist interest in heart failure. My approach is focused on providing early assessment and timely treatment, helping patients access the most appropriate care as quickly as possible in a supportive and patient-centred way.

Alongside general cardiology, I specialise in the treatment of abnormal heart rhythms and the implantation of cardiac devices. This includes pacemakers, implantable cardiac defibrillators (ICDs) and cardiac resynchronisation therapy (CRT) devices, which are used to help manage heart failure and certain rhythm conditions. I hold the British Heart Rhythm Society certificate for device management.

I also advise patients on preventative cardiology, particularly in relation to type 1 and type 2 diabetes, cholesterol metabolism and high blood pressure. Other areas of interest include coronary artery disease, blackouts, pre-operative cardiac assessment and the investigation and treatment of abnormal heart rhythms.

I have implanted more than 250 complex pacing devices, including cardiac resynchronisation devices and implantable cardiac defibrillators, as well as more than 500 pacemakers and over 1,000 diagnostic coronary angiograms.

I have worked as a consultant at Macclesfield District Hospital for two years. I completed my higher specialist cardiology training in the North West Deanery, including sub-specialist training in heart failure and cardiac transplantation.

In addition to my clinical work, I completed a higher research degree (MD) focused on identifying the best methods of pacing the heart after surgery. My research has been published in major European clinical journals.
