New operating theatre opens to help more Liverpool patients access surgery sooner
06 October 2026
More patients across Liverpool and the surrounding region are set to benefit from faster access to surgery following the opening of a new state-of-the-art operating theatre on Friday, October 2.
The new Vanguard operating theatre at Spire Liverpool Hospital was officially opened by consultant foot and ankle surgeon Mr Anjani Singh, who also became the first surgeon to perform an operation in the facility.
Joined by members of the hospital's senior management team and theatre staff, Mr Singh cut the ribbon on a major investment designed to increase surgical capacity and help meet growing demand for treatment from both private and NHS patients.
The purpose-built Vanguard theatre is a fully equipped operating facility that has been installed alongside the hospital's existing theatres. It provides additional space for surgery while supporting the latest advancements in surgical care and patient safety.
For patients, the new theatre means more operations can be carried out locally, helping to improve access to treatment and ensuring more people can receive care closer to home. The increased capacity will benefit both private patients and NHS patients being treated at the hospital, supporting efforts to tackle growing demand for planned surgery across the region.
Chris Greenslade, Hospital Director at Spire Liverpool Hospital, said:
"The opening of this new theatre is an important milestone for Spire Liverpool. It strengthens our ability to meet growing patient demand, supports innovation in surgical care, and demonstrates our ongoing commitment to investing in the very best facilities for our patients, consultants, and colleagues."
The new theatre will support a range of surgical specialties and forms part of the hospital's continued investment in healthcare services for Liverpool and the wider Merseyside community.
Mr Singh, who carried out the first procedure in the theatre, said the additional capacity would help ensure even more patients can benefit from timely access to high-quality treatment.
The opening comes at a time when demand for surgery continues to increase nationally. By expanding its theatre facilities, the additional capacity will support a wide range of procedures, including hip and knee replacements, foot and ankle surgery, spinal surgery, cataract procedures, cardiology treatments, urology services, women's health procedures and general surgery, helping more patients receive specialist care closer to home. The hospital is strengthening its ability to support patients from across Liverpool, Cheshire and North Wales, while continuing to provide high-quality care in a modern, purpose-built environment.
