International rectal cancer meeting in Clatterbridge

27 February 2017

Spire Liverpool Consultant General and Colorectal Surgeon Mr Fraser M Smith is co-organising and hosting an international rectal cancer meeting in Clatterbridge on the 24th March. Co-organiser Prof Sun Myint is a world renowned radiation oncologist who is also based in Merseyside in the Clatterbridge Cancer Centre.

The event called '4th in the North: Evolving Concepts in Clinical Complete Response to Neoadjuvant Therapy for Rectal Cancer' will bring together world experts who have changed the way that rectal cancer is treated over the last three decades.

The conference is being run in conjunction with The Association of Coloproctology of Great Britain and Ireland and also the Pelican Cancer Foundation. It is the first time such a meeting has been held in the north of England. Usually, such meetings are held in London or abroad.

The meeting specifically focuses on the techniques that can be used to treat rectal cancer without a major operation or a stoma bag - yet provide equivalent or near-equivalent oncological results.

Education of surgeons and medical personnel about this alternative approach that is still in evolution and to encourage discussion and learning are the core aims for the meeting. Importantly there will also be representation from patients who have been treated in this manner.
