Professional profile

I have been a senior consultant at Royal Liverpool University Teaching Hospital since 2002. I have a vast experience in managing all variety of common and complex endocrine and diabetes conditions in a tertiary teaching hospital. More importantly, I involve my patients in the decision making process by explaining the possibilities and treatment options in detail.

My expertise includes managing patients with thyroid, parathyroid, adrenal, pituitary and neuroendocrine conditions as well as running a specialised transitional endocrine service. My special interest and research MD was in management of growth hormone deficient patients and patients with calcium and bone metabolic disorders.

In addition to managing all variations and complications in both type-1 and type-2 diabetes I have developed a unique diabetes foot care multidisciplinary service at the Royal Liverpool Hospital.

Over the last 15 years I have held the posts of clinical director, clinical sub-dean for medical undergraduates, strategic clinical network lead for the north coast and north west diabetes lead for advancing quality (AQ). During my five year clinical director tenure the diabetes team won five ‘team of the year’ awards. I was nominated and short listed for the north west leadership award for my leadership skills.

I have successfully developed teams, and designed and implemented many innovative programs in all my roles. The significant and safe reduction of inpatient length of stay by introducing twice-daily consultant wards rounds as the clinical director, development of a comprehensive foot care pathway, recommendations to the All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on structured diabetes education as the network lead, leading the agreement and implementation of AQ diabetes performance measures and introducing pharmacy based undergraduate teaching are a few examples of successful projects under my leadership.

During my training program I completed my two year MD research project on the effects of growth hormone replacement on bone mineral metabolism and received my MD from Liverpool University. I have succeeded in publishing some novel papers in the most reputable endocrine journals in the world. I have since published more than 30 peer reviewed papers in top diabetes and endocrine journals across the world. I am also a referee for many journals.

Personal Profile

I am the chairman and trustee of a UK registered charity Child Protection and Rehabilitation Trust that has successfully changed the lives of street children in Pakistan over the last four years.

I love cricket and I have regularly been playing competitive league cricket for the last ten years in the first division across the UK. I am currently playing the Liverpool competition as a member of the Caldy Cricket Club in the Wirral.

I love watching movies and keenly follow football. I play the flute but cannot say that I am any good at it.

Gardening is my weekend job, which I thoroughly enjoy with my wife and family while having a BBQ at any given chance.

Travelling and photography are the other hobbies I have when I get some spare time.
