I am a Consultant in Pain Medicine working in a large teaching hospital, with my substantive post starting in 2015. I assess and treat patients with long-term pain conditions and acute exacerbations of pain conditions. This includes back pain, neck pain, fibromyalgia, arthritic pain, pain after surgery, complex regional pain syndrome, nerve-type pain and pain related to cancer. Every week I perform interventional pain medicine procedures that include trigger point injections, epidurals, nerve root blocks, blocks for shoulder and knee arthritis, sacro-iliac joint injections and radiofrequency ablation.
I work within a multi-disciplinary team and have good working relationships with physiotherapists and psychologists. I provide medical input into the local fibromyalgia management course and manage a number of patients with this condition.
I have a specialist interest in the management of patients with complex chronic chest pain, including refractory angina and contribute to patient education as part of the Liverpool Refractory Angina Centre.
Areas of interest include: lower back and neck pain, knee arthritis, shoulder arthritis, fibromyalgia and chronic chest pain. I perform a range of interventional procedures and have a specialist interest in the use of nerve blocks for the longterm management of back pain, as well as shoulder and knee osteoarthritis.
In addition to my clinical work, I am the Lead Consultant for numerous educational training courses and draw upon knowledge gained from my recent Masters in Medical Education. I lecture nationally on topics related to Pain Medicine, particularly the management of flare-ups of poorly controlled pain.
I am departmental Lead for Audit and Research, in addition to Local Pain Medicine Educational Supervisor and Consultant Representative for Mersey Pain Medicine Training Group (Health Education North West).
