Dr Kathleen Anne Ward
MB, Bch, BAO (Hons), MD, FRCP
"I enjoy working at Spire Little Aston, everyone is friendly and goes that extra mile to help patients."
I am a Consultant Dermatologist with over 20 years' experience in helping both adults and children with skin, hair, nail and vulval problems. I specialise in general dermatology with a specific interest in allergy testing for skin rashes, the treatment of skin cancer and the management of vulval conditions. My specialist procedures include photodynamic therapy (for skin cancers and skin rejuvenation) and the cosmetic removal of cysts, warts and moles. Since 2006, I have held a busy clinic for non-surgical aesthetic procedures.
I graduated from The Queen's University of Belfast in 1987, with an honours degree. Undergraduate prizes include The Whitla Prize in therapeutics and pharmacology, The Taylor Prize in dermatology, The Sinclair Medal in surgery and The Final MB Prize - first in year. I completed my MD Thesis in 1993 and was elected a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians (London) in 2002, being shortlisted for the prestigious Goulstonian Lectureship. In 2016, I was elected President of the Midlands Dermatology Society.
Over the years, I have had several leadership positions in the NHS including lead clinician for skin cancer services (1996 - 2005), lead clinician for dermatology (2006 - 2009) and lead clinician for photodynamic therapy at Cannock Chase Hospital (1999 - 2016). To date, I have been awarded nine Clinical Excellence Awards in recognition of the quality and excellence of my NHS patient care. As the clinical supervisor for dermatology trainees in the West Midlands (2004 - 2016), I taught in a dedicated vulval clinic, receiving referrals from GPs, gynaecologists and dermatologists from neighbouring hospitals. I continue to see the full range of vulval problems including lichen sclerosus, lichen planus, eczema, vulval pain syndromes and vulval cancers.
In addition to my clinical work, I am proud to have served as a member of the Clinical Services Committee and the Photodynamic Therapy Guideline Development Group at the British Association of Dermatologists. In 2015, our group began the process of updating the national guidelines for photodynamic therapy, and has helped to develop national standards for the delivery of photodynamic therapy services in the UK.
I have received some lovely feedback from patients in the form of testimonials and also as independent patient reviews, which can be found on the iWantGreatCare website.
