Asthma Q&A with Dr Shoaib Faruqi, Consultant Chest Physician at Spire Hull

What is asthma?

Asthma is a common long-term condition which affects the airways of the lungs. Common symptoms are cough, wheezing and breathlessness.

What are the causes of asthma?

We do not know with certainty what causes asthma. It sometimes runs in families and is more common in those who have allergic conditions. Symptoms of asthma may get triggered in response to factors such as allergies, infections or taking certain medications.

How often should I get my Asthma medication monitored?

A thorough asthma review, addressing medical treatment and other aspects of asthma, should happen at least once a year. More frequent reviews should occur if symptoms are not controlled and after any changes in medications.

Can children with asthma play sports?

Exercise in general is good for asthma and this is applicable to both adults and children. If asthma is well managed and under control any type of sporting activity or exercise may be undertaken.

Can the weather affect asthma?

Cold or damp air may trigger asthma symptoms. Viral infections are more common in the winter season and these may also trigger asthma symptoms.
