Mr Ravi Popat

Consultant Specialist Hip and Knee Surgeon

MD Res, FRCS, MBBS, BSc (Hons)

Specialises in

  • Hip and knee replacement surgery
  • Robotics-assisted surgery for hips and knees
  • Partial knee replacement surgery
  • Knee ligament reconstruction
  • Knee arthroscopy including cartilage and meniscus surgery

I am a Consultant Specialist Hip and Knee Surgeon specialising in sports injury reconstruction and joint replacement surgery. I am highly qualified in robotic surgery, using it at times where I feel it can achieve the best possible outcomes for those specific patients and cases.

I'm an expert in joint replacement surgery, with a particular interest in partial knee replacement surgery, and soft tissue surgery (for knee cartilage, meniscus and ligament damage, as well as issues with kneecap instability).

Having trained at some of the leading centres in the world, I look to utilise my skills to offer the finest possible evidence-based care, tailoring each plan to the individual in an effort to enable my patient’s to return to peak function.

At the outset I believe in using both operative and non-operative approaches in an attempt to save the patient’s natural joint where possible, working with my patients to find the best suitable approach for the individual. My expertise is in managing elite athletes, weekend-warriors as well as those who lead more relaxed lifestyles.

I take a holistic approach to my practice, ensuring I take the time to listen to my patients and using the latest technology to identify the cause of my patient’s symptoms. I ensure I explain things clearly using easy-to-understand terms and allow plenty of time for my patients to ask questions and discuss concerns. This allows patients to make the best treatment decisions possible.

My high-volume elective NHS practice is based in St Albans where I lead the Daycare Arthroplasty and Robotic Joint Replacement programmes.

Within my role at St Albans City Hospital I am the lead for Robotic Joint Replacements; the Innovation Lead (Trauma & Orthopaedic Surgery); Elective Hub Implementation Lead and Daycare Arthroplasty Lead.
