I did my medical education and initial surgical training at the University of Calcutta in India. I have been working in various hospitals in the UK since 2002 gaining a broad based experience in every specialty of general surgery. I topped up my training with a fellowship in laparoscopic upper gastrointestinal and bariatric surgery at the Royal Berkshire Hospital in Reading. I have been working as a Consultant in Emergency and General Surgery at Frimley Park Hospital for the last three years.
As an Emergency Surgeon, my job is busy managing acutely unwell surgical patients with life threatening problems. My experience in every aspect of general surgery helps in dealing with the complexity and variety of these cases. On the elective aspect I focus on laparoscopic gallbladder surgery and laparoscopic/open repair of abdominal wall hernias. I also perform diagnostic endoscopies (OGD), colonoscopies, oesophageal manometry and 24 hour pH studies.
Annually I perform more than 100 laparoscopic cholecystectomies, half of which are performed during the initial presentation with acute inflammation ("hot" cholecystectomies). I perform around 50-60 groin hernia repairs with laparoscopic (TEP) or open approach and about 30 abdominal wall hernia repairs.
I also perform around 25-30 emergency laparotomies and 80-100 laparoscopic appendicectomy annually.
I perform around 125 diagnostic colonoscopies and 75 upper GI endoscopies (OGD) annually. I also analyse and report oesophageal manometry and 24 hour pH studies to diagnose gastro-oesophageal reflux disease and oesophageal motility disorders.
I oversee the functioning of the Surgical Assessment Unit (SAU) / Same Day Emergency Care (Surgical SDEC) at Frimley Park Hospital. I have been involved in the development of different pathways to streamline the functioning of emergency general surgery services.
I am keenly involved in teaching medical students and training junior doctors, physician associates and advanced nurse practitioners. I participate in Quality Improvement projects and Clinical Governance meetings.
