Some of the principal treatments carried out by Mr Spencer Harland at Spire include:
Lower back pain and sciatica, neck pain with associated arm pain, spondylolisthesis, spinal stenosis, lumbar microdiscectomy, cervical discectomy, lumbar fusion - open and minimally invasive and lumbar disc replacement.
I was appointed in 1998 as a full-time dedicated Spinal Neurosurgeon at University Hospitals Birmingham (UHB). I qualified as a Doctor at University College Hospital, London, before completing my training as a Neurosurgeon in both London and Cambridge. I was awarded the Norman Dott Medal for outstanding performance in the Royal College of Surgeons’ Surgical Neurology Exit Examination.
Prior to taking up my post in Birmingham, I travelled to Phoenix, Arizona, on a Royal College of Surgeons’ Supported Spinal Fellowship, learning state of the art techniques in complex spinal surgery.
I am now the Senior Spinal Surgeon at University Hospital Birmingham (UHB), regularly performing a wide variety of spinal surgical procedures, from lumbar microdiscectomy to complex reconstructions throughout the spine for degenerative, traumatic and neoplastic pathologies. Although less common, I also perform surgery for tumours within or in close proximity to the spinal cord. This can be highly challenging surgery, requiring a high level of surgical dexterity. The skills required for this type of surgery can be equally applied to more routine procedures, such as microdiscectomy.
Whilst having a busy surgical practice, I have built a reputation for my conservative approach, being keen to pursue physiotherapy, spinal manipulation and injection-type therapies whenever possible. I perform approximately 350 operations a year.
