Treatment restrictions

As part of our long-standing partnership, we will be dedicating much of our resources to the NHS. As a result some of the treatments are being suspended and as a result we are reviewing all planned procedures and consultations.

Professional profile

I am the Senior Spinal Surgeon at University Hospital Birmingham (UHB - currently on sabbatical until April 2020), regularly performing a wide variety of spinal surgical procedures, from lumbar microdiscectomy to complex reconstructions throughout the spine for degenerative, traumatic and neoplastic pathologies. Although less common, I also perform surgery for tumours within or in close proximity to the spinal cord. This can be highly challenging surgery, requiring a high level of surgical dexterity. The skills required for this type of surgery can be equally applied to more routine procedures, such as microdiscectomy.

I was appointed in 1998 as a full-time dedicated Spinal Neurosurgeon at University Hospitals Birmingham (UHB). I qualified as a Doctor at University College Hospital, London, before completing my training as a Neurosurgeon in both London and Cambridge. I was awarded the Norman Dott Medal for outstanding performance in the Royal College of Surgeons’ Surgical Neurology Exit Examination.

Prior to taking up my post in Birmingham, I travelled to Phoenix, Arizona, on a Royal College of Surgeons’ Supported Spinal Fellowship, learning state of the art techniques in complex spinal surgery.

While having a busy surgical practice, I have built a reputation for my conservative approach, being keen to pursue physiotherapy, spinal manipulation and injection-type therapies whenever possible. I perform approximately 350 operations a year.

Please note I see private patients only at Spire hospitals. Please note that your appointment with me will be as a self funding private patient. It will not be possible to transfer your care directly to the NHS. Should you subsequently wish to pursue treatment within the NHS you would require onward referral by your GP.
