Mr Shahnawaz Haleem

Consultant Spinal Surgeon

MBBS, MSc (Tr&Orth), MRCSEd, MRCSI, ESD, EASD, FRCS(Tr&Orth)

I am a triple fellowship trained consultant spinal surgeon with training fellowships covering the whole breadth of adult and paediatric spinal surgery including deformity, degenerative, tumours, inflammatory and musculoskeletal presentations.

My adult degenerative and deformity practice is based at the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital. My practice in the Birmingham Children’s Hospital consists of paediatric deformity correction operative procedures.

I completed my higher orthopaedic training programme obtaining my Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) from the prestigious London Deanery where I was inspired to take up a career in spinal surgery. I have actively worked towards developing and enhancing my specialist skills in world class training centres in the United Kingdom and worldwide. I have also gained the Eurospine Spine Diploma and the Eurospine Advanced Spine Diploma during this process.

My three complex spinal fellowships at the world-class and cutting-edge Southampton, Oxford and St. George’s University Hospitals provided a unique opportunity to work closely with several leading lights in spinal surgery and neurosurgical colleagues in major trauma centres exposing me to a wide range of degenerative, trauma and elective experiences involving the cervical, thoracic, lumbar and sacral spine that have shaped my patient-centred, empathic yet scientific and thoughtful approach to patient care.

I have travelled overseas on prize-winning fellowships to Hong Kong and Istanbul to improve my spinal and paediatric skills at renowned centres where I gained immensely from leading spinal experts. I am known to be a thinking surgeon who always tries to find a safer and better way of improving patient care and outcomes. This is evidenced in my two eponymous classifications that improve patient safety and care worldwide.

I am known for my scientific approach and have authored, taught and presented worldwide. I am very active in research and my published research involves both adult and paediatric topics that are extending the boundaries of spinal surgery. I am active with major spinal and orthopaedic societies and hold leadership roles where I enjoy interacting and improving the spread of knowledge in a bid to help patients worldwide.

I enjoy patient interaction and place my patients at the centre of all of my decisions, which I make with an active consultation process in easy to understand language.
