I was appointed Lead Consultant for Cornea and Anterior Segment Surgery at Worcestershire Royal Hospital in 2013. I completed specialist ophthalmic training in Oxford and London, gaining advanced sub‑specialty expertise in complex cataract surgery, corneal disease and transplantation, and external eye disease. I subsequently undertook a senior clinical and research fellowship in Nottingham, focusing on anterior segment disease, ocular surface inflammation and dry eye.
Since 2016, I have been based exclusively at the Spire Eye Centres in Worcester and Sutton Coldfield, practising at Spire South Bank Hospital, Worcester, and Spire Little Aston Hospital, where I am fully dedicated to private ophthalmology. I care for patients from Worcester, Worcestershire and the wider Midlands.
I perform approximately 800 private cataract and clear lens exchange procedures each year, including complex cases. I offer the full range of premium intraocular lenses, including toric and multifocal lenses. Since becoming a consultant, I have performed over 7,000 cataract operations. My posterior capsule rupture rate is 0.01%, compared with a national average of around 0.5%. I audit outcomes prospectively and regularly attend national and international meetings as a delegate and instructor.
My research into cataract incision imaging is internationally recognised. I was among the first surgeons to use optical coherence tomography (OCT) to study corneal micro‑incision architecture, contributing to advances in blade design and surgical safety. I have published extensively, authored book chapters, and was first author of a major Cochrane Review comparing multifocal and monofocal intraocular lenses (2012). I also have a particular interest in micro‑incision and complex cataract surgery, including the development of Calladine capsulorhexis forceps.
I have a longstanding specialist interest in refractive cataract surgery and clear lens exchange. In 2014, I established the Laser Refractive Surgery Service at Spire South Bank Hospital, Worcester, and Spire Little Aston Hospital. This now includes a VISX excimer laser, enabling wavefront‑guided customised LASIK and LASEK to optimise visual outcomes following lens surgery.
Over the past five years, I have performed over 250 endothelial corneal grafts (DSEK), including complex and combined cases, achieving a success rate exceeding 99% with 100% graft utilisation. I regularly teach corneal microsurgery at ESCRS meetings.
I established the keratoconus corneal collagen cross‑linking service in Worcester in 2014 and have treated over 200 eyes without serious complications.
My clinical interests include corneal and external eye disease, eyelid surgery, and the surgical correction of ectropion and entropion. I also manage glaucoma and dry eye disease, offering SLT and YAG laser capsulotomy. In addition, I also offer laser refractive eye surgery, clear lens exchange, keratoconus and cornea collagen cross-linking, cornea graft surgery, dry eye and general ophthalmology.
Some of the principal treatments carried out by Mr Daniel Calladine at Spire include:
