Headache Assessment and Treatment (HAT) Clinic

Our dedicated Headache Assessment and Treatment clinic

What is it?

Spire Murrayfield Hospital on the Wirral is pleased to announce the launch of a dedicated Headache Assessment & Treatment (HAT) Clinic. A headache is a pain anywhere in the region of the head or neck. Headaches are very common in the general population. Serious causes of headaches are rare. Common causes of headaches such as migraines can be troublesome, and sometimes debilitating. However, most headaches can be helped with correct diagnosis and treatment. The service will be overseen by Dr Sivakumar Sathasivam MB BCh, MRCP (UK), LLM, PhD, who is a consultant neurologist.

How does the HAT Clinic work?

You will be asked to fill in a headache questionnaire to help assess the type of headache you are suffering from and whether you will benefit from having a brain scan (usually a MRI). If it is felt that you will benefit from a MRI brain scan, it will be performed on the afternoon of your evening clinic appointment. The MRI scan will be reported by an experienced consultant neuroradiologist (radiologist with expertise in reporting MRI brain). The MRI report will be available to Dr Sivakumar Sathasivam (consultant neurologist) when you see him for your clinic appointment in the evening.

What are the advantages of the HAT Clinic?

The aim of the HAT Clinic is to provide you with a same-day detailed neurological assessment of your headache. This will minimize waiting and anxiety. Where appropriate, having a MRI brain scan performed and reviewed on the same day as the outpatient consultation will allow better and more accurate management of your headache symptoms. Dr Sathasivam reguarly sees, assesses and treats patients with headaches. The MRI brain images will be reported by a consultant neuroradiologist.

How much does it cost?

The same-day outpatient clinic consultation and MRI brain scan will cost £700. If your consultation neuroradiologist recommends an additional follow-up appointment to see how you are responding to treatment or further scans, these will be charged separately.
