Michael Ellard is a native of Northern Ireland and graduated from Queen's University Belfast in 1992. He moved to England in 1996 where he initially trained in IVF at the Royal United Hospital, Bath. During this post he was responsible for setting up the hospital's egg donation service. He moved to the Mersey region in 1999 to complete his specialist training in obstetrics and gynaecology and became a consultant at Wirral University Teaching Hospitals (WUTH) in 2005.
Mr Ellard has set up the fertility service there and now provides a satellite IVF service in conjunction with the Hewitt Centre in Liverpool. He provides a holistic approach to the management of couples and can provide advice and access to all fertility treatment options. In addition to his reproductive medicine specialist interests he has a recurrent miscarriage clinic. Mr Ellard undertakes minimally invasive surgery for a wide range of gynaecological conditions including hysterectomy and removal of fibroids. He has an extensive non clinical workload which includes; clinical service lead for Womens' services at WUTH and is the training programme director for senior O&G trainees within the North West of England
