MB ChB, BSc, MRCP, MD
I am a consultant cardiologist based in Liverpool and the Wirral, with a particular interest in helping people understand their heart health and reduce their risk of future cardiovascular problems. I believe in taking the time to explain complex heart conditions and investigations in a clear and practical way, helping patients make informed decisions about their care.
I graduated with First Class Honours in Sports and Exercise Medicine from the University of Glasgow in 1999 before completing my medical degree (MBChB) in 2001. I went on to undertake specialist training in general and interventional cardiology in Liverpool, developing expertise in intravascular plaque imaging techniques. I also completed research towards a clinical MD at the University of Liverpool, focusing on the imaging of vulnerable coronary plaques using advanced technologies including intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) and cardiac CT.
Alongside my clinical work, I am a past President of the British Association for Cardiovascular Prevention and Rehabilitation (BACPR), a Visiting Professor at Edinburgh Napier University’s School for Cardiovascular Health, and founder of Venturi Cardiology, an independent heart clinic established in 2021. I continue to lecture nationally on the prevention of heart disease and have contributed to both local and national NHS transformation projects.
I manage all aspects of general cardiology, including heart failure, coronary artery disease, angina, acute coronary syndromes, atrial fibrillation, cardiomyopathy, arrhythmias, high blood pressure, valvular heart disease, and heart conditions related to diabetes, obesity and abnormal cholesterol levels. I also care for patients who have previously undergone coronary stenting or bypass surgery.
My particular focus is cardiovascular prevention and early detection. I use evidence-based approaches to help identify and reduce heart disease risk through lifestyle advice, metabolic assessment and advanced cardiac imaging. I have expertise in deep metabolic profiling, including measures such as HOMA-IR, Apo B and Lp(a).
I perform and report cardiac CT scans and advanced assessments including Caristo CaRi-Heart and HeartFlow CT-FFR with AI plaque analysis. Since 2014, I have performed approximately 400 cardiac CT scans each year, amounting to around 5,000 scans in total. Where appropriate, I also provide cardioversion treatment and arrange investigations such as echocardiography and cardiac MRI, which are performed by my colleagues.
My aim is to provide personalised, evidence-based care that helps patients better understand their heart health and take positive steps towards preventing future cardiovascular disease.
