Dr Nicholas Heseltine

Consultant in Pain Medicine

MBChB, FRCA, FFPMRCA, MRes

I am a Consultant in Pain Medicine with a special interest in the management of complex and chronic pain. My focus is on supporting patients to regain their quality of life, restore confidence, and return to the activities that matter most to them. With extensive experience across both the NHS and private sector, I believe in taking time to listen carefully, explain options clearly, and work in partnership with patients to find the right solutions for their needs.

I treat all forms of chronic pain, with particular expertise in interventional approaches for back, neck, neuropathic and joint pain. For back pain, I perform targeted treatments such as epidural injections for sciatica and denervation procedures for facet-mediated pain - treatments which address some of the most common causes of back pain. I am also experienced in radiofrequency treatments and joint denervation procedures, offering patients a wide range of safe and effective options for pain relief.

Across my NHS and private practice, I perform around 500 interventional pain procedures each year. This high volume of practice allows me to maintain precision, accuracy and efficiency in treatments such as nerve and joint injections and radiofrequency procedures, targeting back, neck, joint and neuropathic pains. Most importantly, it ensures that patients receive safe, effective care aimed at reducing pain, restoring mobility and improving quality of life.

I serve as the College Tutor for the Faculty of Pain Medicine at Wirral University Teaching Hospital, where I am responsible for overseeing the quality of pain medicine training and assessing the competency of doctors in training. In addition, I am a regular lecturer at the University of Liverpool, contributing to the education of medical students and future clinicians. These roles allow me to help shape the next generation of doctors while ensuring that high standards of care in pain medicine are maintained.
