Dr Jim Kerss
Consultant in Sport & Exercise Medicine
MbChb FFSEM DipSEM PGCME
I specialise in the diagnosis and treatment of all types of musculoskeletal and sports injury. I regularly see patients and athletes with bone stress, ligament, meniscal injuries, tendon and joint pain in particular. Frequently I see patients suffering from medical problems related to exercise including sports related concussion, fatigue, under performance and breathing issues including exercise induced asthma. I regularly perform diagnostic ultrasound in clinic to aid diagnosis and explanation of a condition, plus perform ultrasound guided injections to help aid rehabilitation.
In elite sport I work as the lead Sports Physician in the North West at the English Institute of Sport – where I have provided medical care and support to British athletes through multiple Olympic, Paralympic and Commonwealth Games; including working at the Rio Paralympics in 2016 and Commonwealth Games in 2014 and 2022. I am a Team Sports Physician for EF-EasyPost professional cycling team providing medical care overseas at UCI World tour races, including the Tour de France 2021 and Giro d’Italia in 2020, 2021 and 2022.
My previous positions include the Chief Medical Officer role at England Netball from 2016-2022, British Para-Swimming and England Squash. I have also worked as a team Dr in Premiership football and professional rugby league.
I have a particular interest in medical education, currently, I am the Sport and Exercise Medicine Training Programme Director for the North West and I completed a medical education fellowship during my own NHS training. I also greatly enjoy coaching and mentoring other healthcare professionals.
My NHS practice is the Joint Health Integrated Musculoskeletal service at Southport and Ormskirk NHS Trust.

I am married and have two amazing young children. In my spare time I enjoy playing and watching any sport, I previously played rugby union but hung up my boots in my late 20s and have been afflicted by the common middle aged male addiction to triathlon. I'm currently training for my first half Ironman.
