Professional profile

I am a Consultant in Sport and Exercise Medicine at the English Institute of Sport in Manchester. My main roles at the EIS are as the Chief Medical Officer to the British Para-swimming team and the England Netball team, but I also treat elite athletes from other Olympic & Paralympic sports including GB Taekwondo, England Squash and British Cycling.

I have previously worked with professional athletes in Football, Athletics and Rugby League and have recently taken on the role of Lead Doctor to the Toronto Wolfpack RLFC – the worlds’ first transatlantic sports team. Outside of elite sport I work in the NHS at the Musculoskeletal Clinical Assessment Service at Southport & Ormskirk Hospitals.

My practice covers any form of sports injury, musculoskeletal complaint or exercise related medical problem; I am passionate about providing an elite level of healthcare to all my patients irrespective of their ability or level of sport and physical activity. I have particular interests in shoulder, knee and ankle issues, tendinopathies and medical problems related to exercise such as exercise induced bronchospasm and fatigue in athletes.

I firmly believe in the importance of providing an accurate diagnosis and individualised management plan for my patients and place great importance in working alongside other healthcare professionals as part of a multi-disciplinary team in order to achieve that. I utilise appropriate investigations to clarify any diagnoses and work to optimise non-surgical management of the problem be that exercise or rehabilitation prescription, pain management or other strategies such as injection therapies.

Personal Profile

I am married and have two amazing young children. In my spare time I enjoy playing and watching any sport, I previously played rugby union but hung up my boots in my late 20s and have been afflicted by the common middle aged male addiction to triathlon. I'm currently training for my first half Ironman in 2017.
