Mr Rajkumar Gangadharan

Orthopaedic Consultant

MBBS, D.Orth, MRCS, FRCS (Orth)

I have been a Consultant in Trauma and Orthopaedics for 9 years, starting in Oxford University Hospitals in 2017 and currently in Liverpool Hospitals since 2020.

My expertise includes managing complex knee and hip arthritis (hip and knee replacements), sports knee injuries (patellar stabilisation, meniscal repairs, cruciate ligament reconstructions, multi‑ligament knee injury, cartilage repair surgeries), and complex trauma including pelvis and acetabulum.

I perform tendon‑sparing, all‑inside arthroscopic ACL reconstruction, aiming for an early return to sporting activities, using reliable, proven and up‑to‑date surgical and rehabilitation techniques.

Given my experience and specific skills across several subspecialties, I assess patients holistically and provide the right advice and the right surgery - executed with diligence and care of the highest quality, tailored to their individual needs.

I was awarded Trainer of the Year by the Merseyside Orthopaedic Trainees in 2025, and I have a strong research portfolio aimed at improving patients' lives and their journey towards better independence and pain‑free mobility.

I specialise in the following categories of Orthopaedic Surgery.

In Complex Arthroplasty and Joint Reconstruction, I am proficient in Total Knee Replacement (TKR), including standard and complex primary TKRs and revision TKR. I also perform Total Hip Replacement (THR), including primary cemented, uncemented, hybrid and post-traumatic THRs. My expertise includes periprosthetic fracture management, with skills in the fixation of lower limb periprosthetic fractures, revision fracture fixations, revision hip replacements for trauma, and endoprosthetic replacements.

I am experienced in single-stage and multi-stage revision arthroplasty and in managing complex trauma cases referred to the MTC from across Merseyside.

In Sports Medicine and Knee Ligament Reconstruction, I routinely manage elective knee sports injuries, including meniscal repairs, osteochondral fixation and MPFL reconstruction. I have experience in acute and subacute complex ligament repair, including ACL, PCL, PLC and multi-ligament knee reconstructions.

In Orthopaedic Oncology and Metastatic Disease, I contribute to the metastatic bone service through endoprosthetic lower limb replacements and complex fixation for metastatic lesions.

In Complex Trauma and Fracture Management, I am proficient in the management and fixation of pelvic and acetabular fractures. I also manage upper limb and lower limb trauma and associated injuries, including rib fractures.

I have performed over 1,000 joint replacements (hips and knees) and over 600 soft‑tissue knee procedures, including ACL reconstructions, patellar ligament reconstructions, and meniscal surgeries and repairs. I have undertaken a similar number of lower‑limb trauma procedures over the past 14 years, working as a Specialist since 2012 and as a Consultant in Orthopaedics since 2017.

I train Orthopaedic trainees in Merseyside and senior fellows (applying from Europe, New Zealand and India) in Liverpool University NHS Hospitals, and I lead several research projects that have resulted in publications and post‑graduate degree awards.

I recognise complex patient needs, seek and provide advice to fellow consultant colleagues when they are presented with challenging cases, and work collaboratively with different teams to ensure timely, high‑quality care for all my patients.

I collate and quantify the morbidity of complex patients in the department and provide learning opportunities for consultants and trainees through my “Tips and Hints” presentations and workshops for undergraduates and trainees.

I am an invited faculty member and delegate for several conventions and conferences in the UK and across Europe, including those focused on robotic joint replacements, where I update my knowledge, share experience and continue to expand my expertise.

I organise and run journal clubs for trainees, train them, and formally assess their progress, providing constructive feedback.

I was awarded “Trainer of the Year 2025” by the Merseyside Orthopaedic Trainees.
