I am a Consultant Knee and Trauma Surgeon at Liverpool University Hospitals. Since December 2012, I have offered a regional knee reconstruction service for patients in Cheshire and Merseyside.

After graduating from St Andrews and Manchester University medical programme, I spent my early medical career in the Lancashire region. I then undertook my Higher Surgical Training on the prestigious Oswestry Orthopaedic Training programme. Following this I undertook fellowship training in knee surgery at Aintree University Hospital and Alder Hey Children's NHS Foundation Trust. My training was further enhanced by fellowships in America, Germany and Northern Ireland.

I was first appointed as a Consultant in February 2012 in Dumfries but was asked to come back to Liverpool when a consultant post became available. Electively my main areas of interest are knee replacement; both primary and revision; knee sports injuries and arthritis prevention.

I am recognised as one of the foremost trainers within the region. I am regularly invited to teach at national and international meetings, training juniors and other consultants on arthroscopic surgery, ligament reconstruction of the knee and knee replacement and trauma surgery.

I cover a wide range of treatments in which some include, primary knee replacements, soft tissue knee reconstructions, major/complex trauma and acute fracture management. In addition I also specialise within arthroscopic knee surgery and patello-femoral problems.

I specialise in working as a major trauma surgeon in Mersey and Cheshire’s Major Trauma Centre; I am managing the most severely injured patients in the region on a regular basis. I also see patients on the NHS and privately at Spire Liverpool and the Sefton Suite, AUH consulting orthopaedic patients with regards to both elective knee problems and trauma related injuries.

Medico-legal experience: I prepare over 300 medico-legal reports a year: Negligence reports and personal injury reports ranging from soft tissue injuries to complex orthopaedic problems on behalf of claimant, defendant and combined. I have attended conferences and seminars on medico-legal matters and understand Part 35 of the Civil Procedure Rules. Medco registration: DME6122. I have an interest in the recovery from orthopaedic injury in the medico-legal setting. I base this on a critical review of the medical literature.

In addition to my clinical work I am also an examiner for the exit exam for Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeons. I also sit on the Specialist Advisory Committee (SAC) for Trauma and Orthopaedics. SACs play a key role in the development and improvement of postgraduate surgical training in the UK and Ireland. As part of this role I am responsible for the selection process into trauma and orthaopedic surgeons across the whole of England.

My interest in sport started as a young man. At school I was a member of the Merseyside athletics team running the 100 and 200m. Later in life I was a St Andrews University Blue in Rugby. I also represented Manchester Medical School in both rugby and football. Over the last few years I have run marathons and ultramarathons. All of this has given me a keen interest in sports knee injuries and their management for all levels of players.
