I am a consultant ophthalmic surgeon with a special interest in cataract, corneal, and ocular surface surgery. My NHS practice is based at St. Paul’s Eye Unit, Royal Liverpool University Hospital, where I serve as the clinical lead for cataract services.
I have a particular interest in cataract surgery and premium intraocular lens (IOL) implants. I am committed to providing a personalised approach, carefully selecting the IOL that best suits each patient’s visual requirements and ocular health. I introduced the toric IOL pathway at St. Paul’s Eye Unit to help ensure patients achieve the best possible visual outcomes after cataract surgery.
I am also passionate about corneal surgery and routinely perform both lamellar and full-thickness corneal transplants, including DMEK and DSAEK endothelial grafts, in one of the busiest corneal units in the UK. I have a strong interest in managing keratoconus with treatments such as corneal collagen crosslinking, as well as caring for patients with inflammatory and autoimmune conditions affecting the ocular surface. These include dry eye disease, blepharitis, allergic eye conditions, and mucous membrane pemphigoid.
In my clinical practice, I always take time to understand my patients and prioritise their individual needs. My patients often comment on my excellent communication skills and appreciate that I listen carefully and ensure treatment plans are tailored to what is best for them.
In addition to my clinical role, I am an honorary senior clinical lecturer at the University of Liverpool. I train and supervise medical students and act as an academic advisor at the School of Medicine.
I take great pride in training resident doctors and post-training subspecialty fellows from both the UK and overseas, including Italy and Australia, to become specialised cataract, corneal, and ocular surface surgeons.
I also have a personal interest in research and was awarded a Medical Doctorate (MD) with great honours from the University of Heidelberg, Germany. I am currently involved as an investigator in collaborative research with the University of Liverpool. Our team has been awarded a £2.1 million MRC grant to develop a corneal cell bandage for patients with persistent corneal epithelial defects.
I am a Fellow of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists (FRCOphth) and currently sit on the Council of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists. I also serve as the Regional Representative at the RCO and as the North-West representative on the Ocular Tissue Advisory Group (OTAG).
In addition, I am a member of the Tear Film and Ocular Surface Society (TFOS), the Bowman Corneal Society, and the Royal College of Ophthalmologists.
