Preparing for gastric sleeve surgery at Spire Hull and East Riding Hospital

Getting here

Spire Hull and East Riding Hospital is just a couple of minutes’ drive from the Humber Bridge and 15 minutes from Hull city centre. Public transport options are available. We have free on-site parking for you and your visitors.

Your consultations

When you come to your first appointment, you’ll have a chance to meet one of our team of weight loss surgeons in one of our 17 private consultation rooms, all of which have easy access. During your consultation, your consultant will talk to you about your medical history. They’ll be able to explain:

  • The different options for surgery
  • What’s involved, including the anaesthetic
  • Any risks or complications

There’ll be plenty of time to discuss any questions or concerns. You might find it helpful to think of some questions beforehand and make notes during your consultation.

Before going ahead with gastric sleeve surgery, you’ll also meet a dietitian and bariatric nurse specialist so they can make further assessments on whether surgery is right for you.

You’ll need to have a pre-operative assessment which may include:

  • An electrocardiogram (ECG)
  • Blood pressure
  • Blood tests
  • Endoscopy
  • MRSA swabs
  • Oxygen levels
  • Pulse
  • Temperature

Gastric sleeve surgery: your procedure

When you arrive on the day of your surgery, we’ll show you to your own private en-suite room where you’ll have access to all the facilities you’d expect, including:

  • TV with Freeview
  • En-suite
  • Window
  • Armchair

You’ll meet your consultant, anaesthetist and the surgical team. Before the operation, you’ll be given a general anaesthetic so you'll be asleep. Once ready, your consultant will carry out the surgery to remove part of your stomach.

The surgery usually takes one to two hours, but you’ll stay in hospital for up to three days after your surgery.

Your aftercare and recovery

While you’re in the hospital, your nursing team will give you pain relief as and when you need it so that you’re comfortable as you recover.

After you leave hospital, we’ll arrange to see you regularly for up to two years after your surgery so we can keep track of your progress and ensure you’re recovering and losing weight as intended. You'll have a pre-operative dietitian appointment and then follow-up appointments at four weeks, 12 weeks and one 'floating appointment' for you to use after this time when needed.
