People in Hull and East Yorkshire can access latest robotic-assisted hip and knee surgery
23 October 2026
Patients in Hull and East Yorkshire can now choose to have knee or hip surgery with an innovative robot-assisted system, which enables surgeons to carry our knee and hip operations with even greater precision.

The innovative Mako robotic-arm assisted surgery system available for total knee replacement, partial knee replacement and total hip replacement procedures at Spire Hull and East Riding Hospital. It combines advanced CT-based planning with real-time guidance during surgery. Before an operation takes place, a patient's CT scan is used to create a detailed 3D model of their joint, enabling surgeons to develop a personalised surgical plan tailored to their individual anatomy. During surgery, the robotic arm assists the surgeon in carrying out that plan with greater precision.
Research has shown that robotic-assisted joint replacement surgery can lead to more accurate implant positioning, reduced pain following surgery and a faster recovery when compared to traditional joint replacement techniques.
Mr Reza Mayahi Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at Spire Hull and East Riding Hospital, said: “I’m delighted to be introducing Mako at Spire Hull and East Riding Hospital. The Mako robot allows me to tailor each hip or knee replacement to the patient’s individual anatomy and carry out that plan with greater precision thereby resulting in quicker recovery and improved outcomes. What excites me most is bringing that technology to the people I care for, helping them move beyond arthritic joint pain and get back to the things they love.”
Mr Tom Symes Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at Spire Hull and East Riding Hospital, said: “For patients living with joint pain and reduced mobility, Mako robotic-arm assisted surgery represents a significant advancement in hip and knee replacement care. The technology enables highly personalised surgical planning and enhanced precision, while ensuring the surgeon remains in complete control throughout the procedure.
I'm particularly excited to be able to combine Mako technology with the techniques and enhanced recovery pathways we have already developed at Spire, including SPAIRE muscle-sparing hip replacement, partial knee replacement, and day-case joint replacement surgery. It represents another significant step forward in providing highly personalised hip and knee replacement care for patients across East Yorkshire.”
Sarah Dickinson Hospital Director at Spire Hull and East Riding Hospital, added: “The introduction of Mako robotic-assisted surgery at Spire Hull and East Riding Hospital marks an exciting milestone for our orthopaedic services and reinforces our commitment to investing in innovative healthcare. By combining advanced technology with the expertise of our orthopaedic consultants, we can offer patients greater precision, personalised care, and access to leading-edge joint replacement treatment closer to home. We’re proud to bring this technology to the region and look forward to the positive impact it will have for our patients.”
The Mako system is designed to support surgeons undertaking total knee, partial knee and total hip replacement procedures and forms part of the hospital's continued investment in innovative healthcare services for the region.
Patients can access treatment through private medical insurance or by self-funding their care.
