Dr Christopher Lawrence
Consultant Nephrologist
BSc (Hons), MBBS, LLM, MD (Res), MRCP (UK) (Nephrology)
Specialises in
I have been a Consultant Nephrologist, based in Hertfordshire, since 2012. Although I have a particular interest in transplantation I also have a large general nephrology practice based at the Lister in Stevenage and St Albans City Hospital. I particularly specialise in looking after patients with kidney conditions at all stages of chronic kidney disease and acute kidney injury. I am a practical nephrologist, and well versed in procedures, especially kidney biopsies. Working as a nephrologist means that I see a wide range of medical problems and liaise in my day to day work with a large team of specialists. This means that I am also able to see patients with general medical problems.
There are a vast range of kidney problems. My particular skill is in detecting whether a kidney problem exists, whether it is significant and what investigations and subsequently treatments are required (if any). The prospect of kidney disease is often daunting for patients. I am able to add calm and confident reassurance where appropriate and help people to come to the best possible plan of action to best address their problems.
I am the joint lead for transplantation and the lead for nephrology services at St Albans City Hospital, in both of these roles I have contributed to an increase in patient numbers and an improvement in the quality of the service experienced by patients.
I am an educational supervisor for doctors in training. I am actively involved in academic research and I am the local lead investigator for an international randomised clinical trial in the treatment of lupus nephritis.
