Mr Parmjit Sian

I am an orthopaedic surgeon specialising in spinal surgery, with a particular interest in conditions affecting the cervical spine, degenerative spinal conditions and spinal tumours. I also have experience in less invasive spinal surgery techniques and commonly use the Wiltse approach for lumbar spine surgery, which is designed to reduce soft tissue injury where appropriate.

I studied medicine at Leicester Medical School, qualifying in 1999. I completed my core surgical training through the Yorkshire School of Surgery before undertaking higher surgical training in Greater Manchester. After achieving my Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT), I completed a fellowship at the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital in Birmingham.

I further developed my expertise during a travelling fellowship in America, where I attended Johns Hopkins University Hospital and trained in a variety of spinal surgery techniques. Following this, I worked as a consultant at the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital in Birmingham for around three years before returning to the north.

Alongside my clinical work, I am actively involved in teaching junior doctors and spinal fellows. I am also a participating member of the British Spinal Registry and regularly carry out audits of my practice to help improve patient services and standards of care.

I treat a wide range of spinal conditions, including back and leg pain such as sciatica, neck and arm pain known as brachialgia, spinal stenosis, spinal tumours, and conditions requiring cervical or lumbar spine surgery. I understand that spinal symptoms can have a major impact on everyday life, and I aim to provide clear advice and personalised treatment plans to help patients make informed decisions about their care.

My research interests include less invasive spinal surgery techniques and imaging of the spine.
