Miss Victoria Deans
Consultant Hand & Wrist Surgeon
MBChB, MRCS, MSc, FRCS (Tr & Orth)
Specialises in
I provide a specialist service in hand and wrist surgery, and practice dedicated hand and wrist surgery in my NHS consultant post, and privately. Currently I perform in excess of 500 hand and wrist surgery operations per year, as recorded in my surgical logbook.
In 2004 I qualified from the University of Leicester, then completed both my membership (MRCS, 2007) and fellowship (FRCS, 2013) exams with the Royal College of Surgeons. In addition I completed an MSc (2011) in orthopaedic surgery.
In 2012 I was awarded an educational bursary award by The Royal College of Surgeons of England. In 2014-15, I completed one of 11 nationally competitive advanced training programme hand and wrist surgery fellowships in Manchester, which are recognised by the British Society for Surgery of the Hand (BSSH) as the best hand surgery training programmes. I worked for three highly experienced hand and wrist surgery consultants, one of whom was the president of the BSSH at that time.
I am a full time hand and wrist surgery consultant at Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Foundation Trust in Yorkshire. Here I provide a dedicated and specialist service for hand and wrist surgery for patients with both chronic problems, and trauma related injuries. I set up a referral pathway with our A & E department at HRI to refer patients with trauma injuries in to the service.
As I am keen to remain up to date with techniques and research, I regularly attend the BSSH scientific meetings. My last systematic review of the evidence for surgical treatment of STT joint wrist arthritis was published in The Journal of Hand Surgery (AP volume) in October 2017. I presented this evidence at the BSSH scientific meeting in Bath.
I teach both undergraduate medical students, and orthopaedic trainees in the specialism of hand and wrist surgery, pathology and treatment. Also I teach physios, occupational therapists and nurses, and I run a clinic at CRH with several specialist physios.
