Specialises in
I was appointed as a consultant surgeon to the Derbyshire royal infirmary in 1995 and was subsequently appointed to Frimley Park hospital in 1998. As a senior registrar I developed a special interest in colorectal surgery. I was one of the early developers of laparoscopic colorectal surgery and have been a trainer on the national programme since its inception. More recently I have developed a major interest in robotic surgery.
Whilst I trained as a general surgeon working in all areas of the speciality I have focused particularly on laparoscopic surgery and my main research interest is the improvement of rectal cancer surgery. I am an accredited colonoscopist for the national bowel cancer screening programme. Improving the treatment of rectal cancer and training the next generation of surgeons has been my main focus.
Some of the procedures carried our by me are: Laparoscopic and tension free mesh hernia repair, Laparoscopic cholecystectomy, Colorectal cancer and inflammatory bowel disease, Diagnostic and therapeutic colonoscopy, Treatment of haemorrhoids and other perianal conditions.
I have done over 12,000 colonoscopies, over 1,000 operations to remove bowel cancer and over 400 resections for rectal. I have an increasingly busy medico-legal practice predominantly related to medical negligence.
Additional positions held include; Clinical Director for Surgery (1999-2003), Deputy Clinical Director of Surgery at Frimley Health, Secretarial and council roles on national organisations as outlined above, past Frimley Park Cancer lead, past lead clinician for colorectal cancer and current lead clinician for gastrointestinal surgery at Frimley Health.
