Dr Peter Clarkson

I am a leading cardiologist in the UK with over 25 years of consultant experience. I am highly experienced in cardiology and general medicine, specialising in both coronary intervention, including coronary angiography, angioplasty and stenting, and pacing and complex cardiac devices, including conduction system pacing, cardiac resynchronisation therapy and implantable cardioverter defibrillators. I also have a particular interest in cardiovascular disease prevention, especially identifying and addressing underlying metabolic abnormalities.

After completing my training in London, I was appointed to Frimley Park Hospital in 2001, where I served as Lead Cardiologist for 23 years. During that time, I expanded the department from two cardiologists to nine and established invasive and interventional cardiology services through the development of two cardiac catheter laboratories. These services now include coronary angiography, percutaneous coronary intervention, a regional primary PCI service for the treatment of acute heart attacks, pacing, complex device implantation, electrophysiological diagnostic procedures and ablation.

I see patients with a wide range of cardiovascular conditions, including coronary artery disease, valvular heart disease, heart failure, arrhythmias and those seeking preventative cardiology advice. Common symptoms that I assess and treat include chest pain, breathlessness and palpitations.

I currently serve as a Director of the Surrey Cardiovascular Clinic, located at the University of Surrey Research Park in Guildford. The clinic specialises in providing state-of-the-art, same-day cardiovascular diagnostics, including ECGs, echocardiography, exercise stress testing, blood pressure monitoring, heart rhythm monitoring and cardiac CT scanning. Blood testing is also available, and the clinic has specialist teams dedicated to the assessment and management of both metabolic health and heart failure.

Where possible, we aim to provide a one-stop service, allowing patients to undergo diagnostic testing before their consultation so that results are available for discussion during their appointment. This approach enables comprehensive cardiac risk screening and personalised advice for individuals concerned about their heart health, those with a strong family history of cardiovascular disease, or patients seeking guidance on reducing their risk through lifestyle modification. It also offers an efficient diagnostic pathway and access to further treatment for patients experiencing acute cardiac symptoms.
