Dr Heather Joanne Shannon
MB BCh BAO, MRCP, MD
I was appointed as a Consultant Cardiologist at Frimley Park Hospital in 2012. I have a particular interest in the diagnosis and treatment of ischaemic heart disease, and have expertise in coronary angioplasty and stenting for both stable angina and unstable acute coronary syndromes. I also have expertise in complex coronary intervention to include left main stem disease, calcium modification techniques and intravascular imaging guided intervention.
I graduated with Honours from the Queen's University Belfast in 2002, after being awarded a number of undergraduate prizes. I began my cardiology training at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast where I also undertook clinical research leading to the award of an MD. I was then selected to undertake a highly prestigious fellowship in Milan, under the mentorship of Dr Antonio Colombo, a world authority in interventional cardiology. This allowed me to gain unrivalled experience in coronary and structural intervention including transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI). I returned from Milan to complete my training at Imperial College London with a further interventional fellowship at the Hammersmith Hospital.
In addition, I have expertise in transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) for patients with aortic stenosis who are unsuitable for open heart surgery. I am the cross-site lead for the TAVI programme at Frimley Health and is an Honorary Consultant at the Royal Brompton Hospital in London where I regularly perform these procedures as part of the Royal Brompton and Harefield Trust structural heart team.
