Spire South Bank Hospital transforms patient’s life with breast reconstruction following cancer surgery

23 September 2025

Following a mastectomy due to a diagnosis of breast cancer, Helen Stanyon relied on a breast prosthesis, which she found heavy, uncomfortable, and a constant reminder of the cancer. Needing to regain her confidence and quality of life, Helen chose to use her private medical insurance to have reconstruction surgery at Spire South Bank Hospital

The breast prosthesis affected Helen’s mental health and made everyday activities difficult. Swimming with her daughter, holidays abroad, and even using communal changing rooms had all become uncomfortable and distressing.

Helen explained:

“I chose Spire Healthcare rather than the NHS to be assured of the very best surgeon for the type of operation I required. I also wanted the reassurance that all surgery options would be available, so my surgeon and I could decide on the approach best suited to me. Having control over the timing of my surgery was equally important.”

Following a mastectomy, chemotherapy, immunotherapy, and radiotherapy, Helen underwent a bipedicle delayed DIEP flap reconstruction and breast reduction lift for symmetry with Consultant Plastic Surgeon, Miss Joanna Skillman

Helen described her hospital experience at Spire South Bank Hospital as outstanding:

“All staff I encountered were friendly and extremely professional – I felt I was in the best hands possible. I had travelled more than two hours for my surgery, and when the catering manager learned I’d be leaving around lunchtime, they prepared a packed lunch for me to take home – a gesture of kindness I’ll never forget.”

The results, Helen says, have been transformative: “This operation didn’t just change me physically – it changed me psychologically in a way I never expected. I felt like myself again. I was whole again.”

Helen added: “My pain was managed effectively, and any concerns were dealt with quickly. What stood out especially was the care I received from Miss Skillman. She checked on me regularly after the surgery, which was incredibly reassuring. I remain in awe of her skill and professionalism – and deeply grateful for the life-changing operation she performed.”

Since her reconstruction, Helen’s life has changed in immeasurable ways. She is more content, confident, and able to look to the future with her family. She enjoys holidays without restrictions, feels comfortable in clothes and swimwear, and has resumed activities such as swimming with her daughter, going to the gym, and walking the dog without worry.

“My husband even noticed the return of the ‘spring in my step’ that had sadly disappeared after my diagnosis. Everyday moments – buying clothes, enjoying the fresh air, watching my daughter have friends for sleepovers – now feel like small triumphs. I feel genuinely happy again, comfortable in my own skin, and grateful for the freedom this surgery has given me.”

Miss Joanna Skillman, Consultant Plastic Surgeon at Spire South Bank Hospital, said: “Breast reconstruction is about more than restoring physical appearance – it’s about helping women rebuild confidence and move forward after cancer treatment. It’s a privilege to support patients like Helen on this journey and see the positive impact surgery can have on every aspect of their lives.”
