MBBS, MD, FRCP, MBA, MRCP (neurology), PGCME
I am a General Neurologist with a specialist interest in headache disorders, with over 30 years’ experience in diagnosing and treating a wide range of headache conditions. Throughout my career, I have been closely involved in developing and shaping headache care, including pioneering the use of Botox® treatment for headaches in the UK.
I have particular expertise in injection-based treatments for headache disorders, including nerve blocks and Botox® injections, which can be effective options for managing chronic migraine. I also have experience in using non-invasive neuromodulation techniques, which use gentle electrical stimulation to help control symptoms.
Over the course of my practice, I have treated more than 5,000 patients with Botulinum toxin for chronic migraine, delivering more than 20,000 treatment cycles. I have also performed over 10,000 nerve block procedures for patients with headache conditions.
I have played an active role in developing national guidance on headache management. I co-authored the British Association for the Study of Headache guidelines in 2019 and contributed to the NICE guidelines on headache in adolescents and adults (CG150) published in 2015. Since 2015, I have also advised the Association of British Neurologists on headache disorders.
I am closely involved with patient advocacy and support. I served as a trustee of The Migraine Trust from 2010 to 2022 and continue to work with them as an ambassador.
In addition, I organise a national meeting on headache disorders in Hull every other year, a role I have held since 2005. I have also lectured internationally and supported healthcare teams in other countries to establish and develop headache services.
I am actively involved in research and academic work. I have published 83 original peer-reviewed articles in leading neurology and headache journals, and I regularly review submissions for journals including Cephalalgia, The Journal of Headache and Pain, the European Journal of Neurology and the Journal of Clinical Medicine.
Alongside this, I contribute to training the next generation of doctors as an international examiner for the MRCP UK PACES examination.
