I am a colorectal surgeon specialising in the diagnosis and treatment of bowel conditions. My work focuses on caring for patients with a range of colorectal diseases, including inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), which includes conditions such as Crohn’s disease.
I have experience in both colorectal and general surgery, using a variety of modern techniques to achieve the best outcomes for my patients. This includes laparoscopic, or keyhole, surgery, which is a minimally invasive approach designed to support a smoother recovery where appropriate. I also perform colonoscopy procedures, which allow me to examine the inside of the bowel to investigate symptoms and diagnose conditions.
I provide a wide range of surgical treatments for bowel conditions. My work includes abdominal surgery for Crohn’s disease, closure of a loop colostomy, and internal sphincterotomy, which is a procedure used to treat certain types of anal pain. I also treat pilonidal sinus disease and carry out sigmoid colectomy for diverticular disease, where a section of the bowel is removed to relieve symptoms or prevent complications.
I understand that bowel symptoms can feel difficult to talk about, and I aim to create a supportive and reassuring environment where you feel comfortable discussing your concerns. My focus is always on helping you understand your condition clearly and guiding you through the most appropriate treatment options.
Some of the principal treatments carried out by Mr James Gunn at Spire include:
