Specialises in

I am a Substantive Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon at Hull Royal Eye Hospital, specialising in cornea and refractive surgeries. I have nearly 20 years of experience in ophthalmology. I provide a general ophthalmology service as well as specialty services in corneal disease.

As I am accredited by CertLRS, I am adept at performing a comprehensive range of corneal-based laser refractive procedures. In addition, I specialise in lens-based refractive procedures including the use of a variety of premium multifocal and toric lens implants. I also have substantial experience in running dry eye and blepharitis clinics, management of ocular surface diseases, seasonal and atopic eye disease, keratoconus management (including corneal cross-linking), and various anterior segment diseases.

To date, I have performed more than 1,100 cataract surgeries and lens replacement, including premium and toric lenses, as well as teaching and supervising trainees in another 500 surgeries. In addition I have performed more than 500 laser procedures on different parts of the eye, including corneal refractive lasers as LASIK, LASEK, PTK, PRK, lasers to the iris, lens-capsule, vitreous and retina.

I have also managed hundreds of patients suffering from dry eye, blepharitis, and ocular allergy, pterygium excision with graft, alongside performing keratoconus management with cross-linking to many others. This is thanks to a career spanning nearly 10 years in the NHS, and five years previous to that practicing in several countries in four continents (USA, Egypt, India and the Arabian Gulf).

My experience includes holding a post-CCT fellowship in cornea and refractive surgery at Queen Victoria Hospital in East Grinstead, which is the home of the first corneal bank in the UK and is currently a tertiary referral centre for complex corneal disease. Prior to that, I finished the run-through training at the South Yorkshire rotation, Sheffield, with a TSC year in cornea, and was awarded certificate of completion of training (CCT).

I am also a fellow of International Council of Ophthalmology, and I hold a fellowship degree from the Royal College of Ophthalmologists, as well as the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow (FRCS).

I also have expansive teaching experience which helped enhance my skill in my field as well as spread this knowledge to others. I obtained a master’s degree in medical education from Manchester University. I was also previously a microsurgical skills course tutor at The Royal College of Ophthalmologists, and an honorary lecturer in ophthalmology in Manchester University.

Currently, I am a FRCOphth part 2 examiner, a GMC Associate PLAB examiner, OSCE exam writer for the Royal College of Ophthalmologists, and a clinical and surgical supervisor.

Professional leadership

Governance lead at Hull Royal Eye Hospital

Hull University Hospital NHS Trust.

When I’m not with patients, you can find me reading in my study room diligently at 6am, or playing tennis and trying to hit a backhand like Roger Federer. You might also find me leading a gym class, as I am a certified Les Mills Bodypump® instructor, or watching the Liverpool team playing football. When my wife isn’t looking, I often play FIFA or Samurai Shodown on the game console with the kids.

I am also quite interested in music; I play both electric and acoustic guitar, and I very much enjoy the piano and writing songs. I currently live with my beloved wife, three kids and a lovely cat in a quiet suburban area in the East Riding of Yorkshire.
