Professional profile

I am Consultant Gastroenterologist in Hull and East Yorkshire since 2004, having returned to the UK after training in Europe and US and first appointed as a Consultant and Senior Lecturer in Trinity College Dublin. I have particular interest in Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) and am the nominated service lead for the IBD service in the Hull and East Yorkshire NHS Trust. The team I lead have extensive experience in managing complex Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis including latest advances in therapy and increasingly receive tertiary referrals for these from all areas of the country. I have particular interest and expertise in care of adolescents and young adults with IBD and run a well-recognised transition service for this group of patients. I believe in individualised and personalised care to patients in collaboration with my nursing, dietetic and surgical colleagues along with support from clinical psychology and pain management teams.

I have an international reputation in the field of IBD and run a number of national and international multi-center studies looking at aspects of causes of IBD, and newer treatments. My team conduct a number of high profile multi-center studies in IBD and always provide opportunities for patients and their families to participate in our goal of improving diagnosis and treatment of IBD. I am the co-lead for the NIHR LCRN gastroenterology specialty helping to bring new research in diagnostics and therapy of IBD to the UK.

I am also an official of the European Colitis and Crohn's organisation and am involved in developing best practice guidelines with experts from all over the world in various aspects in diagnosis and treatment of colitis and Crohn's disease. For example I am one of the lead authors for ECCO Crohn's disease treatment guidelines, ECCO IBD Endoscopy Guidelines and ECCO Consensus on Pregnancy and Reproduction in IBD. At national level I sit in various committees of British Society of Gastroenterology and am the secretary of the adolescent and young persons section. I am also one of the founder members and co-chair of the Yorkshire and Humber IBD Network.

In addition to inflammatory bowel disease, I also look after patients with other general gastroenterology problems such as indigestion, Barrett’s, coeliac disease anaemia and malabsorption and provide links with my expert hepatology colleagues for liver problems.
