New less invasive hip replacement technique now available at Fylde Coast Hospital
09 August 2018
Mr Vinod Sharma Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon based at the University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Trust recently joined our hospital and routinely provides anterior (or minimally invasive) hip replacement.
This technique involves making a smaller incision and parting the muscles in the hips rather than cutting them meaning quicker recovery time for patients.
Its not clinically suitable for all patients and traditional hip replacement remains the standard procedure in the UK, however Mr Sharma states "Minimally invasive hip replacement has been in common use in France and other European countries since the 1960s but it is relatively new to the English speaking world. This procedure is recognised in the US and Europe as having clear benefits over other approaches, but the UK medical system is still catching up. There is plenty of evidence in orthopaedic literature to suggest that this technique is associated with reduced muscle damage and pain as well as faster post-operative recovery."
Mr Sharma performs both traditional and minimally invasive hip replacement and is happy to talk patients through the benefits of both. He will see patients self-referring without a GP letter. To book an appointment you can book online or call us on 01253 308031.
